What Is Chipotle Mayo?
Contents
Chipotle mayo is a creamy spicy condiment that tastes a little bit like smoke. It can be used as a dip or a spread.
It is made by mixing together mayonnaise, spicy chipotle peppers and a few other simple ingredients. It’s ready in about 5 minutes and has a lot of flavor.
The chipotle peppers and smoked paprika give this sauce a smokey flavor that goes well with grilled foods like burgers and chicken. It also tastes great as a dip for your favorite appetizers. It is often served as a side dish with French fries &sweet potato fries in restaurants. But we also love it on crispy zucchini sticks that have been air -fried.
Since whole, mixed peppers are used to make this mayonnaise, it is on the spicier side. If the heat is too much for you, you can make it less spicy by using less pepper.
But if you don’t like a lot of spice but still want a bit of heat in your mayo, you might like the less spicy boom boom sauce or bang bang sauce. These spices are much less spicy because they are made with sweet chili sauce instead of whole peppers.

Chipotle Mayonnaise Tips and Variations
- Add a pinch of smoked paprika to give the spice a hint of smokey flavor.
- Use less chipotle peppers if you don’t like things too spicy. Or, if you want something spicier, add more peppers.
- Add a little milk to mayonnaise to make it thinner so you can drizzle it over something, like this Mexican Grilled Chicken Salad.Make sure not to add too much, or the taste will start to change.
- If you use vegan mayo instead of regular mayo, this recipe can be made vegan.
- If cilantro tastes like soap to you, feel free to leave it off.
- Chipotle peppers come in different sizes, so think carefully about how many to put in your mayo. Several small peppers might do the trick, but you might only need one or two bigger ones. Don’t change how you pick your peppers. So, you can decide how much spice and chipotle flavor you want.
How to Make Chipotle Puree for Chipotle Mayo
Pour the contents of a 7 – ounce can of chipotles in adobo into a food processor and blend until smooth. This will make chipotle puree. This puree can be kept covered in the fridge for a few weeks. It gives soups, stews, sauces, and other dishes a smoky, spicy flavor.

Is Chipotle Sauce Spicy ?
If you want, this chipotle mayonnaise recipe can be pretty spicy (especially if you leave the seeds in the peppers). I used 1 1/2 chipotle peppers, but if you want it to be really spicy, you can add the whole can. Still, it’s going to be pretty spicy, so I’d probably taste the sauce after adding each pepper.
You could also drop the peppers by 1/2 pepper to make it less spicy. You could take out the seeds, but the adobo sauce can make that a bit messy.
